Antisemitism, Israel and the Middle East Conflict - Workshop for Students (English)

The current situation in Israel and Gaza unfortunately shows once again: the Arab-Israeli conflict can escalate suddenly and massively at any time. Polarizing posts and various conflicts of opinion in social networks are a consequence and people are sometimes speechless in the face of Hamas terror. In this political climate, antisemitism, which is related to the state of Israel, is also uttered increasingly open.

Although the reality of the Middle East conflict is not the cause of Israel-related antisemitism, real crises in the Arab-Israeli conflict are increasingly leading to antisemitic incidents in everyday life here in Europe too. Many people find it difficult to recognize the difference between legitimate and necessary criticism of the Israeli government and antisemitic resentment, as it seems difficult and often overwhelming to orient oneself in the complex history of the conflict and to distinguish criticism from resentment and “fake news”.

We have developed a workshop for university students that allows a multi-perspective examination of Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict and at the same time raises awareness of Israel-related antisemitism. The educational program combines basic factual knowledge about Israel and the origins of the Middle East conflict with an understanding of the functioning of (Israel-related) antisemitism. Students are enabled to recognize the specific form of Israel-related antisemitism and to deal with the topic competently in their own context.
