Innovative Doctoral Formats

A doctorate is often an important prerequisite for the next career step. However, the traditional route straight after graduation is not always the right one. In response to changing needs we have further developed our doctoral programmes. Collaborative and focus doctorates open up new qualification opportunities for professionals and those who do not want to lose sight of their practical career. Please note: We are not currently filling any doctoral positions.

Collaborative Doctorate: Science & Practice in one Format

Working for an automotive supplier and researching artificial intelligence in a university laboratory at the same time? With the collaborative doctorate, we enable Master's graduates and professionals to work 50 per cent academically and 50 per cent practically. Within three years, they gain the necessary professional and research experience to qualify for an UAS professorship. Our practice partners are companies, authorities, associations or organisations that are involved in the Flexible Science Careers Network. We have the right to award doctorates in three research-intensive areas. A cooperative dissertation with partner universities in Germany and abroad is also possible.

Since September 2022, six early career researchers have started their collaborative doctorates at our university. Find out more about their projects and partner companies here.

Focus Doctorate: Scientific Qualification for Experienced Professionals

Specialists who have worked outside the university for more than three years can qualify for an UAS professorship with the focus doctorate. Within two and a half years, they write their dissertation in a full-time academic position and gain the necessary teaching experience. The teaching load is four semester hours per week.

Since August 2024, three young researchers have started their focus doctorates at our university. Find out more about their projects here.
