Popcorn, quiz, and heroines of space travel

On April 26th, about 20 people gathered at Café 1 to watch the film "Hidden Figures"

The film tells the true story of the black mathematicians Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, who played a significant role in the Mercury and Apollo programs at NASA with their calculations. This highlighted the often lesser-known contribution of brilliant women in the history of technological development while also not shying away from everyday experiences with racism and sexism.

In addition to the obligatory popcorn, this evening offered a quiz on the film and the history of space exploration, as well as the opportunity for informal exchange among students and with the staff of the STEM-Coordination and Anti-Discrimination Counseling, who organized the event. Preceding this was an initiative by the student networking group of departments 1 and 2. The combination of cultural offerings and direct exchange, where difficult situations in studies can also be addressed, was met with great enthusiasm and is definitely intended to be repeated.

For any questions regarding diversity and anti-discrimination in the technical departments, please feel free to contact: Janina Hirth, STEM-Coordinator, and Verena Broeren, Anti-Discrimination Department.
