The scent of honey and a thirst for knowledge
Sponsors visited campus bees on our green roofIt is still a few weeks before the honey from our university's campus bees can be harvested again - but some of our bee sponsors were already able to take a look inside the beehives on the green roof of Building 4 on 29 May 2024 - wearing suitable protective clothing, of course. Accompanied by beekeeper Bettina Belz, Fb 1, and beekeeper Thomas Jäschke, Fb 2, the sponsors learnt more about the life of bees, the tools and working methods used in beekeeping and the criteria that must be met in order to harvest good honey. They also had the opportunity to ask their own questions about beekeeping.
Incidentally, our university has been home to three bee colonies on the roof of Building 4 since summer 2021 - they are clearly visible from the stairwell on the 2nd floor. What makes them special: The honey they produce is not for sale, but is given away on certain occasions to guests of honour at the university, award winners and sponsors.
Bees, along with many other species, are important for the existence of ecosystems on earth because they ensure the pollination of a large proportion of plants. The idea was submitted and awarded a prize as part of Frankfurt UAS's operational suggestion scheme.
If you would like to support beekeeping, for example by making the necessary purchases for the bee colonies, beekeeping equipment, new beehives and winter feed, you can take out a bee sponsorship for 25 euros/year via our Sustainability Office or give one as a gift.
