Materialstatt the architecture teaching unit was officially opened on November 30.
Materials for model making - such as those required in architecture studies - can be expensive for students. At the same time, there are often parts left over for which there may no longer be any use for their own purposes. In order to relieve students of the high costs incurred and to be able to reuse leftover materials in the interests of sustainable use of resources, the materials workshop was set up in the Architecture teaching unit, Fb 1. It is located directly at the entrance to the model making workshop and was officially opened on November 30, 2023. While enjoying cold drinks and snacks, all guests also had the opportunity to win one of three laser vouchers in a guessing game.
The Materialstatt is an initiative for sustainability, conscious use of resources and material diversity in model making at our university. For the Materialstatt, workshop manager Patrik Palmu and his team have designed and built a shelving system in the model making workshop (building 1/5th floor) in which materials are collected and made available for reuse. Whenever old models are no longer needed, when leftover materials accumulate during model making, when so-called "garbage" is produced somewhere at the university, the materials can be saved from the garbage can by the Materialstatt initiative. The material is cut into practical formats, sorted by type and made available on the material shelf for further use.
The establishment of the materials shelf was made possible by the commitment of the students and a cooperative QSL funding application at Faculty 1, together with Prof. Dr. Nathalie Heger and Ruth Schlögl.
What materials can be provided?
The Materialstatt is an offer from students for students. Everyone is responsible for ensuring that the shelves are well organized. There are a few rules to ensure this:
- In principle, all materials made of wood and cardboard that you would like to donate can be placed in the Materialstatt.
- The materials should be cut to size by the donors so that they can be sorted into the appropriate shelves.
- Leftover materials that are too small should not be placed on the shelf. Figures, trees and similar small parts can be collected in boxes provided for this purpose
- Important: The shelf is not a garbage can!
- ...and even more important: Be brave. Try out new ways of building models!
