Scholarships for Refugees at University

HessenFonds for refugees – highly qualified students and academics

The ministry of Hesse for higher education, research, science and the arts (HMWK) grants scholarships within the scope of HessenFonds for talented students with an outstanding academic performance and with refugee status, PhD Students and academics at state universities in Hesse. The funding serves to continue a course of study or an academic career at a state university in Hesse. It is usually one year funding. Students should be supported, especially in the introductory phase.

Requirements of the funding line

Funding line for refugee students, doctoral candidates, scientists (funding period October 1st, 2024 to September 30th, 2025)

Requirements for the funding line (see advertisement):

• Person entitled to asylum or status as a recognized refugee

• Those eligible to apply have generally not been registered in Germany for more than four years at the time funding begins, i.e. the asylum application has been submitted and their continuous stay in Germany does not exceed five years. (In certain cases, these periods can be extended to up to six years since the asylum application and up to 7 years of residence in Germany if you have been raising children in the last few years).

• Enrolled or scientifically active at a Hessian university

 

Funding line for persecuted or at-risk doctoral students and scientists (funding period October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025 - deviations possible in exceptional cases)

Requirements for the funding line (see advertisement):

• From 2022, the HessenFonds will be able to nominate additional scientists and doctoral candidates who are being persecuted or threatened in their countries of origin for political, religious or comparable reasons.

• You must also be nominated by a Hessian university and be in your country of origin or in a third country at the time of application

 

The following is required for application:

  1. Application form (incl. data processing, p.1-3)
  2. Letter of motivation (max. 2 pages)
  3. If necessary, an extra sheet from the university regarding documents to be submitted later
  4. Copy of residence permit
  5. Europass CV (max. 3 pages): Create an Europass CV 
  6. Letter of recommendation or expert opinion from the nominating university
  7. Confirmation of a place on the course or certificate of enrollment
  8. University entrance qualification
  9. Proof of performance from your studies (e.g. current transcript of records, if available: bachelor’s certificate or similar)
  10. Proof of language skills, if applicable
  11. If necessary, other meaningful documents and evidence, e.g. about voluntary work (max. 3 pages

Scope of funding:

The HessenFonds scholarship includes the following scholarship rates:

  • Students: 300 Euro/month
  • Doctoral students: 1.200 Euro/month 
  • Academics: 2.300 Euro/mont

Funding period:

01.10.2024 - 30.09.2025

Application:

The application is submitted to the respective Hessian university. The university nominates the qualified applicants to the Hessian Ministry of higher education, research, science and the arts.

Please note that the universities set the internal deadlines themselves. A direct application to Hessian Ministry of higher education, research, science and the arts is not possible!

Closing Date for Applications: 01.08.2024

Romy Henfling, International Office, is responsible for processing the applications at the university. All applications must be completed and submitted by email per E-Mail bis zum by August, 1st 2024
